To strengthen and improve local government and rural development in the nation, the Sierra Leonean Parliament on Monday, December 19, 2022, debated and enacted the “Local Government Act of 2022” into law with certain revisions.
The Local Government Act of 2004 is being repealed and replaced in order to allow for the continuation of local councils, the devolution of functions, powers, and services to local councils, as well as to provide for the development of Sierra Leone.
Before becoming legislation, the Bill underwent extensive debate, numerous consultations, and changes.
The Chairman of the Legislative Committee, Hon. Abdul Sulaiman Marray-Conteh, presented the Report of the Committee at Committee of the Whole House regarding effective scrutiny and specific amendments that Parliament must adopt before passage into law.
Before being passed by Parliament, the Bill was piloted by Amb. Tamba Lamina, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development.
