On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, the Parliament of Sierra Leone deliberated on two pivotal Youth Bills, subsequently referring them to the Legislative Committee for further examination.
The bills under debate were:
The National Youth Service (Amendment) Act, 2024: This bill aims to amend the National Youth Service Act of 2016, addressing various related issues.
The National Youth Commission (Amendment) Act, 2024: This bill seeks to revise the National Youth Commission Act of 2009, along with other pertinent matters.
Minister of Youth Affairs Mohamed Orman Bangura presented both bills, emphasizing the necessity for the proposed amendments. He highlighted the importance of updating these acts to better serve the youth of Sierra Leone.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Youth Affairs, Hon. Abdul Latif Sesay, expressed his support for both bills and urged the House to commit them to the Legislative Committee for thorough scrutiny.
During the debate, Acting Opposition Leader Hon. Daniel Koroma underscored the need to incorporate gender considerations into the proposed amendments. This sentiment was echoed by the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mathew Sahr Nyuma, who also advocated for enhanced female representation within the framework of these acts.
Hon. Nyuma further stressed the importance of addressing age-related issues in relation to the evolving dynamics of Sierra Leone’s youth sector.
