The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has recognized the remarkable contributions of its physically challenged member, Saffa B. Moriba, on the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Despite facing the challenges of polio since childhood, Moriba, affectionately known as “2-2-4-9,” has persevered in his passion for journalism. His career began as a newspaper vendor in Kenema, but his determination led him to become a respected journalist, reporting on various topics, including court cases, sports, and mainstream news.

Moriba’s dedication to his craft was evident during the Sierra Leone Civil War, where he reported for the BBC from 1996 to 2006. He has also worked for numerous media outlets in the country and currently contributes to the Awoko newspaper and the national broadcaster SLBC Radio and TV.

“I love journalism. It gives me a sense of purpose to my community, my country, and my family,” Moriba shared. “I believe in hands-on journalism, going out into the field and telling the stories of the people.”

In 2021, SLAJ honored Moriba with a golden jubilee award for his distinguished career. Beyond journalism, he has also excelled as a teacher, receiving the prestigious Presidential Best Teachers Award in 2023 for Kenema District.
