The Inspector General of Sierra Leone Police, William Fayia Sellu has responded to citizens on different issues during a radio interview after questions were asked regarding the conduct of police officers.
While addressing the issue of police officers engaging in corrupt practices on checkpoints, he accused citizens of being accomplices, stating that they normally failed to bring such complaints to their notice but rather shared them on air whenever they have the opportunity.
He said the public should use the proper reporting channel and see what the institution will do, adding that as an head he will not be present in every checkpoint or station, but the institution will soon being a good strategy which will be able to cube these challenges.
He also clarifies issues of cyber security, as their responsibility is to carry out investigation and the matter later sent to the Office of the Attorney General for advice on what to charge on before it is sent to the Magistrate Court.
He further speaks on the issue of banning bike riders on the Central Business District areas across Freetown which he said the implementation will soon start. He clarifies that those with private motorbikes would be allow, adding that some MDAs workers have bikes which they normally use to go to work.
He also said bail is free as people only need their signature as an assurance that they will make available the accuse person if the need arise. He said any officer cought doing the opposite will face the appropriate action.
He also addressed the issue of protest, wherein he stated that there are regulations to be followed by information the Inspector General through a formal letter who have the right to grant access or decline after ethical interview with the intent organizer or organizers. He said most times people fail to complied with the procedure.
“We don’t have problem with protest. If you follow the process, we can allow it.”
The issue of denying Babadi and others the access to protest was brought up after following due process. In his response he said the numbers included in the letter were false as they try calling but were answered by people who have no idea about the process, adding that the thumb prints in the letter were own by a one person.
He disclosed that any police office who is found engaging in drug will be release from their duty as they have zero tolerance for drug and also officers found accomplices with civilians will face the law.
He also throw light on their transformation from force to service, which he said they have gone back the 1964 police act which is in review as and have also study from Ghana’s experience as they have been using it since 2001.
He concluded by calling on the public to have confidence in the police.
