On August 19, 2024, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) held a press conference at its headquarters to outline new measures aimed at bolstering national security.

The event, attended by high-ranking officials including the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP), and Chief Superintendents of Police (CSP), both in person and online, highlighted the SLP’s commitment to maintaining peace and addressing security concerns across the nation.

ACP Dr. John Martin Senesie, who chaired the conference, assured the public of the SLP’s dedication to ensuring adequate security. He addressed ongoing issues related to violence and cannibalism, emphasizing the force’s readiness to tackle any threats to national peace.

A key development discussed was the recent delegation trip to Ghana. The SLP sent representatives to study Ghana’s military and policing practices, aiming to adopt effective strategies to enhance their own operations. The Head of the Police Media confirmed that the visit was fruitful, leading to valuable insights and the establishment of a beneficial partnership between the Sierra Leone and Ghana police forces.

The choice of Ghana for this knowledge exchange was explained by the Head of the Police Media as based on shared geographic and historical ties rather than the assumption of Ghana having superior police practices.

The collaboration reflects Sierra Leone’s strategy to learn from its regional neighbor’s effective practices and adapt them to improve local security measures.
