The President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, has addressed public concerns regarding his frequent international travels, asserting that those trips are vital for securing developmental opportunities and enhancing Sierra Leone’s global image.

Following his recent election as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Bio emphasized the progress the nation has made in reshaping its reputation from one associated with conflict and corruption to a country of respect and potential.

In his statement, President Bio remarked, “The name and image of Sierra Leone has earned respect,” highlighting the shift in perceptions about the country.

He acknowledged the historical challenges Sierra Leone faced, including war and the Ebola outbreak, but stressed that significant strides have been made to change those narratives.

The President called on all citizens to contribute to earning respect for the nation, stating, “It takes respect for your community member to give you a leadership role.” He expressed optimism about using his new leadership position in ECOWAS as a platform to further improve Sierra Leone’s standing in West Africa.

Addressing criticisms of his travel schedule, President Bio explained, “People often lament over my frequent travel, but they should know that I need to go in search of opportunities.” He specifically referenced his absence on June 23, 2025, which was due to an important appointment related to health initiatives.

Sierra Leone is leading the chart in immunization and vaccination,” he noted, revealing that the Alliance for Vaccine group is advocating for more vaccine support for the country.

The President urged the public to understand that his travels are not for leisure but are essential for promoting Sierra Leone’s interests abroad. “As President, you automatically become the chief diplomat, with the responsibility of selling the image of your country,” he said.

President Bio concluded by reaffirming his dedication to advancing Sierra Leone’s development and urged citizens to support ongoing efforts to enhance the nation’s global reputation.
