President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone participated as a panelist at the 27th Commonwealth Business Forum in 2024, where he underscored the critical role of technology in advancing development and combating corruption.
Speaking on the event’s theme, “Connecting the Commonwealth,” President Bio highlighted the positive impact of internet expansion in Sierra Leone, specifically lauding Starlink’s contribution to improving connectivity.
In a discussion alongside Lord Maryland of Odstock, Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), and Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink, Bio emphasized that Sierra Leone’s increasing internet coverage, now present in 14 out of 16 districts, is central to the nation’s development ambitions. He described Starlink as a “revolutionary and viable tool” for enhancing nationwide connectivity, further recommending its use to other nations.
President Bio stressed that technology is a powerful solution in the fight against corruption, noting that reducing cash transactions through digital platforms could lead to improvements in sectors such as healthcare, education, and agriculture. “We believe that technology is a viable solution to combat corruption,” he said, adding that the growing number of internet users in Sierra Leone aligns with the government’s push to modernize.
The president also reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s status as a low-income country but highlighted the nation’s recognition of the importance of technological advancements, particularly in achieving his human capital development goals. He emphasized that increased internet access will connect students and educational institutions, boosting learning opportunities.
Starlink’s Vice President, Lauren Dreyer, expressed gratitude for Sierra Leone’s embrace of the satellite internet service, stating that their aim is to empower individuals and expand services across more countries. She emphasized that Starlink’s mission includes creating accessibility for diverse communities.
Richard Griffiths, the event moderator, commended President Bio for his leadership and dedication to advancing technology in Sierra Leone, recognizing his government’s efforts in promoting digital inclusion.
