The Sierra Leonean government, in collaboration with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and other development partners, has launched the Kassirie Mini Grid project, delivering clean and dependable electricity to a community long underserved by traditional energy infrastructure.

The Kassirie Mini Grid, powered by a 67-kilowatt solar capacity and backed by 204-kilowatt-hours of battery storage, is a significant milestone in the country’s push toward renewable energy. The project is the third initiative supported by the Universal Energy Facility, a multi-donor, results-based financing program managed by SEforALL.

This development will provide reliable electricity to 54% of households, businesses, and public institutions in Kassirie. By replacing fossil fuel generators with solar energy, the project aligns with President Julius Maada Bio’s vision of advancing renewable energy and reducing dependence on non-renewable sources.

“This project is transformative for our community. For the first time, we have consistent electricity that supports our daily lives and businesses,” said a local Kassirie resident.

The Kassirie Mini Grid is expected to improve living conditions, promote economic development, and foster environmental sustainability in the region. Thousands of residents stand to benefit from the new energy source, which promises to be a model for future renewable energy initiatives across Sierra Leone.
