President Julius Maada Bio, in his capacity as the current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, arrived in Abuja, Nigeria, to preside over an Ordinary Session.

Bio, who assumed the chairmanship in June 2025, expressed his anticipation for the proceedings: “As Chair of the Authority, I look forward to constructive deliberations with my colleagues on the urgent challenges confronting our region.”

His term as Chairman has focused on restoring constitutional order, deepening democracy, and revitalising regional security. The meeting is expected to address critical issues facing West Africa, including political instability and the ongoing efforts to foster regional economic integration.

On the global stage, President Bio announced the successful adoption of a landmark resolution at the UN Security Council. The resolution on Youth, Peace and Security was co-tabled by Sierra Leone and Guyana.

In a statement following the adoption, the President heralded the resolution as a fitting “final major initiative of our Council tenure,” which concludes at the end of this year. Sierra Leone has been a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the 2024-2025 period.

”Young people are not an afterthought; they are essential partners for peace. I remain fully committed to investing in them,” President Bio stated.

This initiative caps a high-profile tenure for Sierra Leone on the Security Council, where the nation has consistently championed African issues, including conflict-related food insecurity and climate-related security risks, further cementing its role as a key voice for peace and security on the continent.
