The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has reported 94 new Mpox cases in Sierra Leone, raising the national total to 1,481. The virus continues to spread aggressively, particularly in the western and rural areas of Freetown, with Bombali District alone recording 54 new infections.

Health authorities have expressed deep concern over the growing number of cases and are urging the public to adhere strictly to contact precautions. In response to the rising infections, the Ministry is establishing holding and treatment centers in Hastings, Calaba Town, and Port Loko Town to better manage and contain the outbreak.

Mpox symptoms typically appear within 7 days of exposure but can take anywhere from 1 to 21 days to manifest. The illness generally lasts between 2 to 4 weeks, although individuals with weakened immune systems may experience longer recovery times.

Common symptoms include rash, fever, sore throat, headache, muscle and back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes. In some patients, fever or rash may be the first visible sign, while others may experience different symptoms initially.

The Ministry reminds the public that Mpox is not the same as chickenpox and urges anyone who develops a fever and unexplained rashes to call the emergency number 117 immediately for medical advice or assistance.

Public vigilance and early reporting remain critical in controlling the outbreak and protecting vulnerable communities across the country.
