The Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL) has condemned the same-sex marriage which occurred on Friday, September 12 2025, in Waterloo, Western Area Rural District.

IRCSL stated that such action undermines the moral standards and religious teachings that guide the peace and harmony of Sierra Leone.

According to IRCSL, Sierra Leone is a nation founded on strong cultural, religious, and moral values, and does not recognise or condone such practices. It added that both Christianity and Islam, the dominant faiths in the country, uphold marriage as a sacred union between a man and a woman; therefore, this recent incident stands in direct contradiction to the spiritual, moral, and cultural fabric of the society.

“The IRCSL strongly condemns this act, which undermines the moral standards and religious teachings that guide the peace and harmony of our nation. While we continue to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence amongst all, we emphasize that no action should be taken that openly disregards our laws, religious doctrines, and traditions.”

IRCSL confirmed mounting internal independent investigations and have proven beyond all reasonable doubts that no recognized Imam of its membership is involve in such act. It called on the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this matter and take appropriate action in accordance with the laws of Sierra Leone.

The union clarified that not all every religious leader’s act is of the IRCSL membership, further encourage all religious leaders to remain faithful and committed to the cardinal principles of the IRCSL.

“As a Council, we remains committed to working with government, civil society, and communities to preserve and protect the spiritual and moral integrity of our beloved nation.”
