The Renaissance Movement has submitted key recommendations to the Chairman of the Law Reform Commission Yada Williams Esq., calling for reforms to the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to enhance accountability and align with democratic principles.

The Chairman of the Movement, Mustapha Turay said the group advocates for strengthening the Independent Police Complaints Board (IPCB) by expanding its mandate and resources to ensure independent investigations and transparency.

They recommend embedding democratic policing principles in law, ensuring police actions are justified, proportionate, and within legal limits.

Further suggestions include implementing merit-based recruitment and promotion within the force, increased community engagement in policy-making, and adherence to international human rights treaties.

The Movement emphasizes the importance of protecting citizens’ rights to peaceful protest and ensuring public trust through transparent rules and performance metrics.

These reforms aim to modernize the SLP and foster public confidence in law enforcement.
