Residents in the eastern Freetown community of Kissy are raising concerns following reports that the government, under the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), is allegedly planning to sell part of the area to private interests.

According to unconfirmed information circulating within the community, the planned sale could result in the demolition of several properties, including homes, schools, mosques, churches, and other critical infrastructure.

Community members claim that they were not adequately informed or consulted about the proposed move. “Una memba wey r bin de tel una say SLPP government de pa sell party of Kissy?” questioned one local resident who asked to remain anonymous, expressing frustration and disbelief. “Dem get for broke lot of houses, schools, mosques n churches but Na d true de las.”

Although the government has yet to issue an official statement confirming or denying the reports, the lack of clarity has stirred anxiety among Kissy residents. Many fears forced evictions and the potential loss of cultural and religious landmarks that have stood in the community for decades.

Local civil society groups are calling for transparency and community engagement before any decisions are made. “Development is important,” said one activist, “but not at the cost of people’s homes and heritage. If this is true, the people must be properly consulted and compensated.”

Attempts to reach officials from the Ministry of Lands and the SLPP leadership for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
