Villagers near the Mabai Community Health Post have raised concerns over the deteriorating conditions at the health facility, describing it as hazardous to the community’s well-being, particularly for lactating mothers, children, and pregnant women.

Residents told journalists on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, that the center, meant to save lives, has become an unclean and unsafe environment, with specific issues reported in the labor room.

Pregnant women expressed frustration over the foul odor and unsanitary conditions in the labor room, which should be a safe and sterile space for delivery. “The labor room is disgustingly dirty. Our lives are at risk,” said one pregnant woman who requested anonymity. Others echoed similar sentiments, highlighting their discomfort during the delivery process.

Upon visiting the facility, this reporter confirmed its dilapidated state. Damaged infrastructure, lack of proper maintenance, and filth were evident. Despite residents claiming that the District Health Management Team (DHMT) of Tonkolili provides maintenance incentives to health centers, the Mabai facility remains in disrepair, raising questions about how funds are being utilized.

Sources revealed that the health center’s poor condition is compounded by ongoing disputes between the In-Charge of the facility and the only other staff member. This conflict, which reportedly involves officials from the DHMT attempting intervention, has disrupted the hospital’s operations and affected the quality of care for patients.

Additionally, residents alleged that the In-Charge brought her children and grandchildren to live at the center, leading to further damage to the building.

Youth Leader Mohamed Sankoh called for urgent intervention. “The situation is disgusting. The place does not resemble a health center. We urge the DHMT, the Tonkolili District Council, and the Ministry of Health to act immediately or the community will continue to suffer,” he said.
