The Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) has commenced a three-day regional sensitization campaign in support of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, focusing on the intersection of gender issues and access to safe water.

The initiative, led by SALWACO’s Directorate of Communication, Gender, and Outreach, began in Makeni on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. It will continue in Bo on Thursday, December 5, and conclude in Kenema on Friday, December 6.

The campaign seeks to highlight the critical role of accessible, safe, and affordable water in minimizing gender-based violence (GBV) and other social risks exacerbated by inadequate water supply. Targeting SALWACO staff and broader regional audiences, the effort includes interactive radio talk shows and workshops to emphasize the need for sustained efforts in water provision to mitigate GBV-related hazards.

“This campaign reinforces our commitment to safe water provision and gender equality,” said Mary Mansaray Ngegba, Director of Communication, Gender, and Outreach at SALWACO. “By ensuring access to safe water, we hope to reduce vulnerabilities and empower communities.”

Ngegba is joined by key team members, including Gender Manager Mary Patricia Kanu and Senior Communications Officer Sheku Putka Kamara, who are spearheading the outreach activities.

The sensitization aligns with SALWACO’s mandate of ensuring equitable access to safe drinking water and promoting societal well-being, marking a significant contribution to the nationwide fight against gender-based violence.
