Sierra Leone’s 2023 presidential candidate and member of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC), Samura Kamara, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100.

In a statement, Kamara described President Carter as a “remarkable leader” whose legacy would forever be remembered for his unwavering commitment to democracy, good governance, and human rights.

“We mourn the loss of a great statesman who dedicated his life to promoting peace, justice, and freedom around the world,” Kamara wrote.

Carter’s humanitarian efforts, particularly through the Carter Center, were lauded by Kamara, who emphasized the impact Carter’s work had on global communities. His advocacy for human rights and democracy was a source of inspiration for many, including in Sierra Leone.

“The Carter Center’s election observation missions have been instrumental in supporting free and fair elections in Sierra Leone, strengthening our democratic institutions, and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability,” Kamara stated.

Kamara further noted that President Carter’s dedication to democratic values and human rights had a profound influence on Sierra Leone, and that his legacy would continue to guide future generations. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Carter family. We honor his memory by reaffirming our commitment to the values he held dear,” Kamara concluded.

Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. He had been in hospice care since February 2023, following a battle with brain cancer. Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, was known for his advocacy on human rights and social justice, as well as his role in brokering the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt during his presidency.

Although his presidency was often seen as disappointing, Carter went on to have a remarkable post-presidential career, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and living longer than any previous U.S. president. His work continues to inspire those dedicated to advancing peace and justice globally.
