Today, a high-level technical meeting was held at the Chief Minister’s conference room, bringing together key stakeholders from various ministries, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), Ministry of Finance (MOF), Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR), Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI), Ministry of Youth Affairs (MoYA), and Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE).
The meeting followed a bilateral engagement between President Julius Maada Bio and the esteemed former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn.
In his opening remarks, the Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the former Prime Minister and his delegation for their willingness to share valuable insights on Ethiopia’s agricultural journey. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of international collaboration in advancing Sierra Leone’s agricultural sector.
Former Prime Minister H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn provided an in-depth overview of Ethiopia’s agricultural transformation, sharing lessons learned from their own path to food security. He outlined the steps Ethiopia took to overcome challenges and reach the current state of agricultural success.
According to the former Prime Minister, the focus on Ethiopia’s people, land, water resources, and financial investment played a critical role in their progress. He stressed the need for a shift in perspective, urging the importance of moving beyond subsistence farming to embrace mechanized agriculture, recognizing agriculture as an integral part of the nation’s commerce.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, also delivered brief remarks, underscoring the importance of strengthening agriculture to ensure food security and promote sustainable economic growth for Sierra Leone.
The meeting was an opportunity to strengthen ties between Sierra Leone and Ethiopia, as well as to exchange valuable experiences in agricultural policy and practices.
