Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, David Sengeh, in a Facebook post, promised to conduct performance checks in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) next week.
According to the Chief Minister, the visit will be part of his itinerary for next week to gauge the successes of public offices in 2024 and their plans for this year.
“First thing next week I’ll visit public offices to check in with you on delivery,” Sengeh noted.
The upcoming visit is anticipated to be a pleasant surprise, as the specific public office has not been disclosed. Nevertheless, the Chief Minister has expressed a clear intention for the visit, which is scheduled to take place early on Monday and Tuesday.
“Which MDA serves the best coffee on Monday and Tuesday so I start there?” he inquired.
This isn’t Sengeh’s initial experience conducting performance checks in public offices. He began his visits to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) during his first year as Chief Minister. At that time, he expressed that these visits would play a crucial role in fostering accountability among public officials regarding their deliverables and commitment to their responsibilities.
In recent years, there has been criticism directed at the government by some members of the local community, who feel that State House has not been adequately supervising public and civil servants. This concern highlights a perceived decline in oversight that has raised questions about accountability and governance within the public sector.
Some members of the public believe that there is need for improved supervision which they say could be an opportunity to enhance productivity in MDAs, as some officials may benefit from guidance to strengthen their work ethics.
