Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh, representing President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, officially launched the 2026 Sierra Leone Population and Housing Census at the Bintumani Conference Center.
President Bio was in Guinea-Bissau attending to important regional matters as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
Addressing over 500 attendees, Chief Minister Sengeh reminded the audience that President Bio’s vision for Sierra Leone is to become a green and inclusive middle-income country by 2039. He said: “When we say together WeWillDeliver, this is what we mean that together, we will deliver on this very important goal by 2039.”
He emphasized that the census is a core component of the Medium Term National Development Plan (MTNDP), specifically Chapter 5, Objective 5.7: Strengthening Statistical Systems, which recognizes the census as essential for “effective and sustainable development.”
“This is a radically inclusive census,” Chief Minister Sengeh said. “If you care about schools, roads, health facilities, connectivity, the environment, local government, and frankly, development of any form, please get counted. Leh den kont you oh!”
He expressed gratitude to development partners, particularly UNFPA, and encouraged others to provide financial and technical support. He also thanked political parties for their involvement, affirming that the process has been fair, open, transparent, and inclusive.
Seven international observers are currently in the country to monitor the census, and Chief Minister Sengeh looks forward to analyzing the results of the ongoing pilot.
In a striking moment, he asked the audience how many knew Sierra Leone’s national development vision. Fewer than 10 hands went up. He reminded them: “The answer is simple. Sierra Leone’s vision, as embedded in the national development plan, is to become a green and inclusive middle-income country by 2039. Together, we will achieve it.”
