The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, has spoken on the time frame of the proposed new constitution and a referendum as the country’s general election is fast approaching.
Sesay, while responding to the question whether the Constitutional Review Committee is planning to hold a referendum at the same time as the general elections, stated that the committee is presently looking at what is feasible for the country, adding that they are trying to conclude the drafting process.
He disclosed that they have separated the process into two because they observed that a lot of proposals mentioned electoral reforms, which is the white paper and the recommendations from the Tripartite committee, which they have combined as one and have already been drafted and will be gazetted to the public and will also be the first document parliament will look into once it commence recess in 2026.
The committee will further look into other proposals which comprises of non-entrench and entrench provisions in the constitution, adding that at that point, the nature of the 1991 constitution would have change that it cannot be called the 1991 constitution but a new one.
“Instead of going into a referendum with just the entrench provision, we want to go into a referendum with a single question to the public which will be a yes or no question on the new question.
He further that the committee will held an active discussions with other actors on the appropriate time frame. He ended by confirming that the country will have a new constitution before the end of president Bio tenure in office
