Sierra Leone’s top statistical officials are participating in the 57th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission, a major global forum on statistical policy and practice.

The Statistician General of Sierra Leone, Andrew Bob Johnny, and the Director of the National Statistical System, Francis Tommy, are representing Statistics Sierra Leone at the meeting, which is being held from 3 to 6 March 2026.

The United Nations Statistical Commission convenes national statistical offices and international statistical institutions to set global statistical priorities, share innovations, and harmonize standards. For Sierra Leone, participation in the session presents a strategic opportunity to strengthen technical capacity, deepen international partnerships, and align national data systems with global best practices ahead of the 2026 Population and Housing Census.

Delegates at the session are deliberating on several issues directly relevant to Sierra Leone’s statistical agenda, including improvements in data quality, modernization of statistical systems, and enhanced coordination among national statistical bodies.

During the meeting, the Sierra Leone delegation is also expected to hold bilateral discussions with key international partners that have supported the country’s national data initiatives.

Officials say the engagements and technical exchanges at the Commission are anticipated to yield practical benefits for Sierra Leone’s statistical programme. The insights and partnerships developed at the 57th Session are expected to contribute directly to preparations for the 2026 Population and Housing Census and other national data initiatives.

By engaging with global peers and technical partners, Sierra Leone aims to modernize its statistical infrastructure and produce more timely, reliable, and policy-relevant data for decision-makers and the public.
