Sierra Leone on Sunday, June 30th 2024 mourns the passing of a trailblazing leader and inspirational figure, Brigadier General Kestoria Olufemi Kabia, the first female brigadier in the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF).

As the Assistant Chief of Defence Staff for Gender and Equal Opportunity, Brigadier Kabia exemplified dedication to service, breaking barriers and setting a precedent for women in the military across West Africa.

Born and educated in Sierra Leone, Brigadier Kabia’s journey in the military began in 1978 when she joined the RSLAF after completing the Long Service Commissioning Course at the Women’s Army Royal Corps College in the UK. Her illustrious career, spanning over three decades, was marked by numerous milestones, including being the first female one-star officer to represent Sierra Leone at the African Land Forces Summit in the USA.

Brigadier Kabia was a highly respected figure in both military and civil society, known for her expertise in logistics, personnel management, and gender equality advocacy. Her leadership roles within the RSLAF were extensive and impactful. She served as Director of Personnel, Director of Public Relations, and ultimately Assistant Chief of Defence Staff. In these roles, she played a crucial part in promulgating the first Gender Policy for the RSLAF, fostering partnerships with local and international gender groups, and advocating for women’s empowerment in the security sector.

Her commitment to gender equality and empowerment was reflected in her civil contributions as well. Brigadier Kabia was actively involved in various organizations, such as the Soroptimist International – Freetown Chapter and the Women’s Movement for Peace. She also served on numerous educational boards, demonstrating her dedication to community service and education.

Brigadier Kabia’s educational achievements were as distinguished as her military career. She earned a Master of Arts Degree in Education and Administration from the University of Sierra Leone and held several diplomas in military strategic studies and management. Her outstanding service and dedication to her country were recognized with numerous awards, including the Grand Officer Order of the Rokel (GOOR) and the Golden Jubilee Award.

Throughout her life, Brigadier General Kabia left an indelible mark on Sierra Leone and beyond. She was not only a pioneer in the military but also a fervent advocate for gender equality and women’s rights. Her legacy of courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment to military excellence and gender equality will continue to inspire future generations.
