The Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) has officially responded to the recent appointment of the nation’s new Chief Electoral Commissioner, Edmond Alpha, calling for strict impartiality as the country begins its long-term preparations for the 2028 general elections.

In a press statement released on February 21, 2026, the SLBA confirmed it had closely monitored the high-level consultations between the government and the nation’s political leadership. According to the Association, 12 out of 14 registered political parties signaled their approval for the candidate before the formal appointment.

The appointment was made in accordance with Section 32 (3) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6 of 1991), which mandates that the President consult with leaders of all registered political parties before such a selection.

While the SLBA extended its congratulations to the incoming Commissioner, the legal body issued a firm reminder regarding the weight of the office.

“The SLBA urges the Commissioner to perform his duties with absolute neutrality as the country approaches its general elections come 2028,” the statement read.

The Association concluded its briefing by noting it remains “seised of the matter,” indicating it will continue to provide oversight and legal commentary on the Electoral Commission’s activities moving forward.
