November 3rd, 2023, Freetown International Airport witnessed a historic moment as Turkish Airlines’ A330-200 touched down for the first time in Sierra Leone. The arrival marked the inauguration of Turkish Airlines’ full operations in the country, signaling a new era in air travel connectivity for Sierra Leone.

This significant milestone was warmly received by the management, Board of Directors at Freetown International Airport, and the local community, reflecting a collective eagerness to embrace this newfound partnership. The Turkish Airlines A330-200 is scheduled to conduct four weekly flights to and from Sierra Leone, greatly enhancing the country’s international connectivity.

The decision for Turkish Airlines to commence operations in Sierra Leone stems from the recent conclusion of Air France’s services in the region. Air France cited challenges related to low passenger numbers and high taxes as reasons for ceasing its operations in Sierra Leone. Turkish Airlines stepped in to fill this void, recognizing the growth potential and a renewed opportunity in the region’s aviation sector.

Acknowledging the significance of this partnership, the Ministry of Transportation and Aviation, alongside the Sierra Leonean Government, expressed gratitude to the Turkish government for permitting Turkish Airlines to establish a robust presence in Sierra Leone. The collaborative effort between the governments and Turkish Airlines is seen as a crucial step towards fostering economic development and strengthening the aviation sector within Sierra Leone.

The arrival of Turkish Airlines signals a promising chapter in Sierra Leone’s air travel industry, fostering economic growth and providing enhanced travel options for both residents and international visitors. With this new venture, Sierra Leone is poised to witness an upsurge in global connectivity and economic opportunities.
