Minority Leader in parliamentary, Hon. Abdul Kargbo during his participation at Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in South Korea, emphasized Sierra Leone’s unique position in the global climate conversation.
According to Hon. Kargbo, Sierra Leone is facing rapid population growth and harsh climate impacts, despite contributing very little to global emissions.
He also highlighted the potential of the country’s young population, over 60% under 25, as both a challenge and an opportunity. He said that with the right investments in education, skills, and green jobs, young people can become powerful drivers of sustainable development.
He further made a strong appeal for global cooperation in five key areas, such as easier access to adaptation-focused climate finance, meaningful technology transfer, investment in youth and girls’ education, legal protections for those displaced by climate change, and support for Africa’s green economic transformation.
He concluded his speech by urging world leaders to see population change not as a burden but as a call to action, and also to turn the summit’s dialogue into real, lasting impact.
