Sierra Leone’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Jiwoh Emmanuel Abdulai, has expressed optimism that COP29 will yield a strong global consensus on climate action, underscoring the need for solidarity among nations to tackle the climate crisis.

Speaking at the summit, Abdulai emphasized the urgent need for enhanced climate action, noting the severe climate-related challenges faced by Sierra Leone, including rising climate variability, biodiversity loss, and economic vulnerability.

Addressing world leaders and delegates at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Abdulai highlighted Sierra Leone’s proactive steps toward addressing climate change, which include the adoption of updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the implementation of innovative local initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building resilience to climate impacts.

“Sierra Leone continues to face significant threats from climate change, but we are committed to adapting to these changes while contributing to global climate solutions. Our efforts are centered on prioritizing both adaptation and mitigation strategies that protect our communities, preserve ecosystems, and promote long-term sustainable development,” Abdulai remarked.

He also outlined key projects currently being implemented, such as strengthening early warning systems, improving disaster management frameworks, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Additionally, Sierra Leone is exploring opportunities for investment in renewable energy, including solar and hydroelectric projects, as well as forest restoration and biodiversity conservation efforts.

In his speech, Abdulai stressed that while Sierra Leone is making strides, realizing these ambitious climate goals will require substantial financial support and access to technology transfer.

He called on the international community to provide long-term resources to ensure the success of these initiatives and to support developing nations in their climate resilience efforts.

COP29, which began on November 11 and runs through November 22, is expected to generate agreements on key climate finance goals, notably the New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG), which aims to establish a fair and ambitious framework for climate financing.

The summit is also focusing on initiatives linked to green energy, sustainable development, and climate resilience, including the launch of 14 groundbreaking initiatives aimed at tackling global climate challenges.
