The National Public Health Agency (NPHA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), has confirmed the first case of Type 2 Polio Virus (PV2) in three years. The case involves a four-year-old male child from the Approved School Community in Western Area Urban, Freetown.
According to a press release issued by the agencies, the sample was collected on June 17, 2024, and subsequently sent to Abidjan for further analysis. The laboratory is currently working to determine whether the virus is circulating or vaccine-derived. This case marks the first detection of PV2 in a child since 2021.
The NPHA and MOH have reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm. The press release highlighted the extensive immunization efforts undertaken in May and June 2024, which saw two rounds of supplementary immunization achieving coverage rates of 99.5% and 98%, respectively. These initiatives are part of the ongoing commitment to safeguard public health.
The agencies emphasized their dedication to protecting the community from public health threats and ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens. They will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.
