The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Government of Sierra Leone have signed a landmark agreement worth USD 105 million.
The initiative, which follows the Climate Resilience Energy Transition Dialogue (CRET-24), was formalized by Bernard Hein, IFAD Regional Director for West and Central Africa, and the Ministry of Finance.
The eight-year project aims to enhance the livelihoods of over 62,000 households, directly impacting 373,000 individuals.
The program’s primary focus is on livestock development, which is expected to foster economic resilience in rural communities.
Notably, the project prioritizes gender equity and youth empowerment, ensuring that a minimum of 40% of the beneficiaries are women and 30% are youth, including individuals living with disabilities.
Minister of Finance Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura praised the initiative, highlighting its transformative potential for Sierra Leone’s agricultural landscape.
“This project aligns perfectly with the government’s agenda for economic diversification and poverty reduction through sustainable agriculture,” he stated.
The initiative is set to improve livestock production and market access, strengthen food security, and create employment opportunities, particularly for vulnerable groups.
With its inclusive approach, the project will play a critical role in addressing social inequalities, empowering women and young people, and supporting those with disabilities to participate in the agricultural economy.
Great initiative, please remember small scale livestock farmers irrespective of their gender or being youths.
