The Republic of Sierra Leone has counterclaimed US Law Firm, Jenner and Block after the Firm accused the country of legal arrears for service rendered between 2019-2022.
The US Law Firm represented Sierra Leone in a case brought up by a mining concessionaire called Gerald Group in 2019 for mining rights. The case would have exposed the West African country to paying up to $1.8 billion in damages.
The Law Firm said they represented Sierra Leone after it paid $3.6 million leaving the remaining $8.1 million as arrears.
A DC court ruled in favour of the Firm earlier this year in January —ordering the country to pay the arrears.
Sierra Leone, however, has counterclaimed the Firm for fraudulent overbilling for their service.
The case is due to come later this month in Washington DC.
