World Tourism Day celebrations in Pujehun District reached a high point with the official launch of Sierra Leone’s Gastronomy initiative, setting the stage for the upcoming UNTOURISM Regional Gastronomy Forum for Africa in April 2026.

The event drew hundreds of participants, including tribal leaders, community stakeholders, and enthusiastic schoolchildren, turning the celebration into a vibrant festival of culture, food, and pride in Sierra Leone’s heritage.

From cassava tuba, potatoes, pumpkins, fresh peppers, and catfish to regional delicacies such as Tanga Jessay, Payla, Magoandae soup, and Jakarto soup, the showcase highlighted the depth of the Southern Region’s culinary traditions. Traditional beverages like ginger beer, Mampama, and Agbetesie (also known as Omolay) added to the festive spirit.

The strong presence of schoolchildren symbolized continuity, ensuring the younger generation remains connected to Sierra Leone’s cultural roots. Performances, exhibitions, and cultural displays brought to life the richness and diversity of the region, while also underscoring its tourism potential.

Organizers confirmed that the next regional gastronomy showcase will soon be announced, signaling momentum in positioning gastronomy as a central pillar of Sierra Leone’s tourism strategy.

This year’s celebration not only marked a milestone for World Tourism Day but also reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to elevating culture and cuisine as key drivers of investment and international tourism. With the UNTOURISM Regional Forum for Africa on the horizon, Pujehun’s launch sets a strong precedent for the nation’s role in shaping gastronomic tourism across the continent.
