Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr Timothy Kabba, held a bilateral engagement with Libya’s Petroleum Minister, Dr Khalifa Abdulsadek, on the margins of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Tripoli.
The meeting builds on an already established professional relationship between the two ministers, following their initial encounter during the 2024 Hajj (1445 AH) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Both ministers, who have backgrounds in petroleum engineering, share expertise in offshore oil and gas drilling and reservoir management.
Their discussions have previously focused on developments in the global oil and gas industry, particularly technological advancements and the evolving geopolitical dynamics surrounding the energy transition.
In Tripoli, Dr Kabba and Dr Abdulsadek explored opportunities for enhanced cooperation, especially in light of Libya’s re-emerging oil and gas sector. Libya, which holds Africa’s largest proven oil and gas reserves, has so far extracted less than five per cent of its recoverable resources, indicating significant untapped potential.
Both sides emphasized the importance of leveraging these resources to benefit African countries, including Sierra Leone, through improved access to affordable petroleum products to support energy supply and power generation.
Dr Kabba reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening energy diplomacy amid global energy challenges, highlighting the importance of strategic continental partnerships.
He also conveyed goodwill to the people of Libya, wishing them peace, unity, and prosperity, and described the country as a key Pan-African partner.
The engagement reflects growing cooperation between Sierra Leone and Libya in advancing regional collaboration within the energy sector.
