Dominion Christian University has been officially closed until further notice for allegations of awarding PhDs without the approval of the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).

This University came to be known by many Sierra Leoneans and the world at large recently when the chancellor of the said university and graduands were on a video caught awarding Ph.D in a secluded outskirt of Freetown, Waterloo under a mango tree.

According to the TEC, the institution had earlier directed the DCU to cease all activities related to tertiary education training until they fully comply with the statutory provisions for the registration of tertiary education institutions in Sierra Leone.

To prevent the University from doing anything contrary to TEC, the Sierra Leone Police had to put the university convocation location under surveillance to prevent the university from its proposed congregation of honoring degrees. Despite the measures put further by the TEC and the Sierra Leone Police, the DCU gone to the extreme and held their congregation under the mango in waterloo.

On April 1, the police arrested Prof. Bangura and a few other staff of DCU. The police said the arrests were made in line with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that establishes the pillars of cooperation and collaboration between the TEC and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) in ensuring compliance with the legal and regulatory frameworks governing tertiary education in the country. The TEC said the DCU administrators were recalcitrant to legal compliance issues and as such ordered the closure of the university on April 5.

The top management of Dominion Christian University (DCU) situated on the outskirts of Freetown are presently at the CID headquarters in Freetown undergoing investigations for operating an illegal entity and awarding doctorate degrees in different specializations the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) said were fake.

According to reports, Dominion University is now officially closed until further notice.
