Sierra Leone has been ranked as the least happy country in the world in the latest World Happiness Report 2025, published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford.
The report, which assesses 140 countries based on key indicators such as social support, income, health, freedom, generosity, and corruption levels, places Sierra Leone at the bottom of the global rankings.
The World Happiness Report is widely recognized as a measure of a country’s overall well-being, focusing on citizens’ quality of life and satisfaction rather than just economic performance. This year, Sierra Leone replaced Afghanistan and Lebanon as the least happy nation, reflecting severe socio-economic struggles, governance challenges, and widespread poverty.
Finland has once again been ranked as the happiest country in the world for the eighth consecutive year.
Key factors contributing to Sierra Leone’s position as the world’s least happy country include:
Low Life Expectancy and Poor Healthcare: With limited access to quality healthcare, high infant mortality rates, and widespread preventable diseases, many Sierra Leoneans face significant health challenges.
Economic Hardship and Unemployment: A high cost of living, rising inflation, and widespread unemployment have left many struggling to afford basic necessities.
Education Challenges: While there have been efforts to improve education, many children still lack access to quality schools and vocational training, limiting their future prospects.
Weak Social Support Systems: Many Sierra Leoneans lack government assistance or strong community support networks, making them more vulnerable to economic shocks and personal hardships.
Corruption and Governance Issues: Public trust in government remains low, with concerns over corruption, lack of accountability, and ineffective policies impacting national progress.

I don’t believe. We are a happy people here in Sierra Leone
Nothing to happy about, Sierra Leone is a very stressful country.
No Job Opportunities
High Cost of Living
Political Instability
High Taxation, especially in our Businesses
Poor Health Care Service
Lack Of Basic Amenities like (Electricity, Communication & Internet, etc.)
Etc.etc.
May Allah have mercy on this Country.

Zero tolerance, no cohesion and inclusive running of the country.
Everyday we hear about order from above lol. I take myself as a case study, since I was sacked In 2019, up till now!, life has been tough for my and my family. How can I be happy with such things that occurs in our land. My boy of 9yrs asked me one-day and he said “buddy, these days, it is hard for you to smile. Is it because Maada Bio spoilt your job?” I laughed and shook my head and keep mute. Lots of depression, oppression and untimely death kills people faster in SL.
God Almighty bless SL 🙏🏼
We the people especially the two dominant tribes in terms of population.
As long we keep voting people based on tribalism, regionalism, and partisan line we will never enjoy an inclusive, transparent, effective, and efficient governance.
We have been trapped in the choices we make during elections.
We have ineffective policies, endemic corruption, polarised nation and a weak civil service system. Words cannot explain how we Sierra Leonean are in melancholy and a state of zero hope for the future of the nation, their children, and themselves in particular.
For over 50 years, the people of this country has no choice but to stand in limbo and wonder what is going on whilst the crooked politicians continue looting their minerals and tax payers money.
Low electricity compared to some countries in the region, no investment in agriculture, poor health care facilities, poor road network systems, limited or no job and investment for the youths. Above all we have no National Agenda.
Sadly, these upheavals are no nearer to solution soon.
And prayers cannot solve it either, they can be solved with ease when we become critical in making leadership choices not on partisan, regional, tribal, and affiliation bases.
The citizens on the other hand need thorough awareness on their roles and responsibilities as citizens in nation building.
