On April 3, 2024, the United Nations Security Council held a briefing on Children and Armed Conflict, focusing on addressing the consequences of denial of humanitarian access for children trapped in conflict situations.

Malta, Chair of the Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict, in their capacity as the UNSC President for the month of April 2024 organized the briefing as one of their signature event.

Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative to the UN, H.E Ambassador Dr. Michael Imran Kanu, emphasized the need for member states and the Security Council to strengthen conflict prevention tools and strategies, as well as those that protect children in conflict situations.

He noted that legislation and policies restricting humanitarian work and workers, particularly those related to counterterrorism measures, are compounding issues and limiting children’s access to aid.

Ambassador Kanu expressed deep concern over the high number of children subjected to grave rights violations in conflict situations.

He shared Sierra Leone’s experience with conflict and its impact on children, emphasizing the importance of accountability to address impunity.

Sierra Leone commits to supporting efforts to address these issues and will continue to work collectively with other members States to ensure the protection of children in conflict situations.
