Andrew Bob Johnny, the Statistician-General of Sierra Leone, has been unanimously elected as the Rapporteur of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) for a two-year term.
His election came amidst the fifty-sixth (56th) session of the United Nations Statistical Commission which was scheduled to hold in person, in New York from the 4th March to 7th March, 2025.
In his new role, Mr. Johnny would be responsible for documenting, summarizing, and reporting on the discussions and decisions made during the UNSC sessions in 2024 and 2025. The position is deemed crucial, as it involves capturing key issues, proposed standards, and agreed-upon actions related to international statistical best practices.
The position of Rapporteur is regarded as a role typically held by highly experienced statisticians with deep knowledge of international statistical standards.
Report revealed that Mr. Johnny’s election reflects his dedication to enhancing Sierra Leone’s National Statistics Office, particularly through innovative and technology-driven approaches to data collection that ensure the reliability of data for national development.
Following his election, Mr. Johnny expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Bio for the trust placed in him. He highlighted that the achievement signifies the transformative progress in Sierra Leone’s data collection and analysis sector, which he said is gaining recognition on a global scale.
The UN Statistical Commission, established in 1946, is the highest decision-making body for statistics worldwide. It is responsible for setting statistical standards and methods and promoting their implementation at both national and international levels. Mr. Johnny’s role would be pivotal in guiding those discussions and decisions for the coming years.
