The Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has Reinstated 1,802 Suspended, Unverified Teachers.
According to the Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission, they conducted a nationwide teacher registration and verification exercise in March 2025, with two subsequent extensions in May and June, respectively. These exercises captured critical real-time data of teachers in classrooms across the country and those active on the payroll.
At the end of July, 4,662 teachers who were not physically found on the verification data nor came forward during the extension periods were suspended from the government payroll, pending investigations.
However, the Commission called for and received details of teachers with claims to have been registered and/or verified, but still on the suspension list.
According to the Commission, they have been working with the Ministry of Finance to ensure that legitimate teachers in this category are immediately reinstated with payment of their salary backlogs. They added that the process will continue up to the end of September 2025, with the Commission submitting lists for reinstatement to the Ministry of Finance in phases, as they are received.
As of Friday, August 15th, a list of 1,802 teachers received and verified to be found on the registration list was forwarded to the Ministry of Finance for immediate reinstatement in the August payroll. They have been confirmed to be reinstated and received their August salaries with a backlog of July’s pay.
Furthermore, the Commission informed the general public that they are currently compiling similar lists for the second phase, and the deadline for this submission is between this Monday, 8th, and Friday, 12th September.
“Please note that if a teacher is not found to be on the registration list, his/her head-of-school will have to commit to an undertaking that the teacher is actively teaching in the school before inclusion in the second phase submission for reinstatement,” TSC said.
Finally, the Commission stated that they will contact heads of schools for teachers who had already submitted their details and request teachers who will be coming forward to do so with their heads-of-schools between 8th and 12th September.
The news serves as a beacon of hope for most parents after information was put out earlier that teachers will go on strike due to arrears due to them. With the new academic year to start this week, the strike action would have served as a major barrier for public schools to follow their schedule.
