As the month of August starts today, Sierra Leone will begins United Nations Security COuncil Presidency after a decision that was made on June 6th, 2024 from 188 of 193 UN member states.

Sierra Leone will once again return to the prestigious role after a 53-year of absence, a decision made by other countries after reflecting on the country’s international respect.

Sierra Leone will join other countries such as Algeria, Guyana, the Republic of Korea, and Slovenia, which are also part of the UNSC for the month. During its presidency, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio will lead a historic debate focusing on Africa’s push for reform within the UNSC. The debate will underscore the continent’s call for changes to enhance the Council’s effectiveness and representativeness.

As this position is not permanent, it rotates among its members in alphabetical order of member states, with each country holding the position for one calendar month. Sierra Leone’s upcoming presidency is a notable milestone, highlighting the country’s growing influence in international diplomacy and its commitment to addressing global peace and security issues.
