Sierra Leone has proudly stamped its authority on Africa’s culinary map, emerging victorious at this year’s West Africa Food Festival (WAFFEST) by winning the prestigious Best Country Cuisine of Africa Award.

In a remarkable showing, the Sierra Leone Chef Association also secured two accolades for outstanding dessert plating, making it a double celebration for the country’s gastronomy sector.

Leading chefs and culinary teams from Sierra Leone showcased a fusion of traditional Salone flavors and modern plating techniques, captivating judges and audiences alike. From hearty, heritage-rich dishes to innovative dessert presentations, Sierra Leone’s entries reflected both authenticity and creativity.

The achievement not only underscores the nation’s rich culinary heritage but also highlights its growing prominence in Africa’s gastronomic scene.

Sierra Leone outperformed regional powerhouses including Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Abidjan, and Liberia, signaling the country’s readiness to compete at the highest level.

“This victory is the fruit of dedication, training, and teamwork from our chefs, apprentices, and supporters who worked tirelessly to lift the flag of Sierra Leone,” representatives of the Chef Association stated.

The success sets the stage for Sierra Leone’s participation in the upcoming 2026 UNTOURISM Regional Gastronomy for Africa Forum, where the country aims to leverage food diplomacy and tourism.

Officials see the WAFFEST win as a catalyst for regional collaboration, culinary tourism, and cultural exchange, positioning Sierra Leone as an emerging hub of gastronomic excellence in West Africa.

The Sierra Leone Chef Association remains committed to training and mentoring young chefs, while continuing to showcase local flavors with modern interpretations. The long-term vision is to attract gastronomic tourism and inspire a new generation to embrace Sierra Leone’s diverse cuisine.
