The Deputy Administrator and Registrar General, Joseph Fofana, has reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) at the 65th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies from 9th to 17th July 2024.
Joseph Fofana stated that Sierra Leone’s participation in these assemblies represents a significant step towards fostering international cooperation and strengthening the global intellectual property framework.
Fofana expressed the delegation’s alignment with the statement delivered by Kenya on behalf of the African Group and extended congratulations and gratitude to WIPO Director General Daren Tang for his excellent report.
Highlighting the complex economic, social, and environmental challenges facing the world today, Fofana emphasized the crucial role of WIPO in providing a multilateral platform for member states to work closely together, strengthen trust, and enhance partnerships to overcome these challenges.
Sierra Leone upholds strong support for the WIPO treaty on intellectual property, including genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge. This treaty is seen as vital for least developed countries (LDCs) like Sierra Leone, as it provides a framework to protect cultural heritage and empower local communities by legally recognizing their rights over these resources. This protection ensures fair compensation and attracts investment in bioprospecting and promoting economic growth.
Fofana underscored the importance of intellectual property (IP) in fostering innovation and technological advancement for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by providing legal protection, attracting investment, enhancing competitiveness, and facilitating market expansion and collaborations. He added that the government of Sierra Leone views intellectual property as a transformative tool for rebuilding socio-economic infrastructures and achieving sustainable development goals.
Additionally, Fofana noted the role of women’s entrepreneurship, innovation, and creativity in fostering technological advancement, enriching culture, and contributing to economic growth. He further emphasized that the government’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment is a crucial element for attaining sustainable peace and social and economic development.
Sierra Leone reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the creation of a mutually beneficial IP ecosystem under the guidance and leadership of the WIPO Director General.
The Sierra Leone Delegation to the WIPO Assemblies was headed by the Administrator and Registrar General, Madam Saptieu Elizabeth Saccoh.
