Sierra Leone joins other countries in celebrating World Intellectual Property (IP) Day 2025 with the worldwide theme “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP.”
The national celebration was organized by the government, through the Office of the Administrator and Registrar General (OARG) and the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, in collaboration with Telem Uncommon Sounds, a creative organization that promotes local talent.
This year’s commemoration focused on the importance of intellectual property in helping artists and creatives throughout Sierra Leone, as well as how IP may help them prosper in a developing digital and creative economy.
Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation Salima Monorma Bah talked about the use of technology in allowing good and efficient IP protection and economic inclusion during her speech at the ceremony.
“Technology is one of the most powerful enablers of intellectual property protection and economic inclusion. At the highest level of priority, we are working as a government to ensure that the systems exist to protect the work of Sierra Leonean creators, so they can build businesses, tell their stories, connect with global markets, and fully benefit from their talent and innovation.” Salima Monorma Bah said.
Stakeholders said that a strong, accessible intellectual property system is not simply necessary for protecting rights as the country invests in digital infrastructure and support methods for the creative sector.
The event brought together legislators, artists, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders to debate ways to increase IP awareness and support for creators. It also provided as a forum to showcased Sierra Leonean musicians’ talent and perseverance, with many still using their talents to build culture and push social change.
World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on April 26 to strengthen the role of intellectual property in fostering creativity and innovation around the world.
