The first batch of Sierra Leonean scholarship students has arrived in Russia to pursue their studies. A total of 11 students, including 9 females and 2 males, arrived at Moscow’s Domodedovo International Airport on October 3rd.

The students, selected by the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE), will be studying General Medicine and Surgery at RUDN University. Despite challenges at the airport, the National Union of Sierra Leone Students in the Russian Federation (NUSS-RF) successfully facilitated their transportation and registration.

The students were warmly welcomed by the NUSS-RF President, Alfred Osman Kamara, and his executive board. Kamara expressed gratitude to the Sierra Leonean Embassy and senior students for their assistance in settling the new arrivals. He also commended the government for its commitment to gender equity.

The MTHE recently bid farewell to a group of 32 Sierra Leonean students who have been awarded scholarships to study in Russia. The students, selected based on their academic merit, will be pursuing various disciplines, with a strong focus on medicine.

The scholarships are part of the government’s efforts to empower young people and address critical challenges facing the country, particularly in the healthcare sector. The MTHE believes that by investing in education, Sierra Leone can develop the skilled professionals needed to drive its socio-economic progress.

One of the scholarship recipients, Famata Kanneh, shared her emotional journey at the farewell ceremony. Kanneh, a student from Milton Margai Technical University, expressed gratitude for the financial aid she received from the government, which enabled her to continue her studies. Her story highlights the transformative power of education and the importance of supporting students in need.
