A group of promising young leaders from Sierra Leone has left for the United States to participate in the 2025 Pan Africa Youth Leadership Program (PAYLP), a U.S. Department of State initiative designed to foster civic engagement, leadership, and volunteerism among African youth.

Organized by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and implemented by Meridian International Center, the program brings together 150 high school students and adult mentors from across Africa for a three-week cultural and leadership exchange.

The U.S. Embassy in Freetown confirmed the delegation’s departure in a social media post, stating:

“Our 2025 PAYLP cohort has officially departed for the United States! These inspiring young leaders and their mentor from across Salone will engage in an unforgettable exchange focused on civic education, leadership, and community service.”

The embassy added, “We are proud of these bright changemakers and look forward to their return with new skills and ideas to contribute to Sierra Leone.”

Reports indicate the program will commence in Atlanta, Georgia, with workshops, cultural excursions, and leadership training. Participants will subsequently be divided into smaller groups to experience different regions of the United States, aiming to broaden their cultural understanding and perspectives.

During their time in the U.S., the delegates are expected to engage in interactive leadership training, conflict resolution seminars, and social entrepreneurship sessions. They will also participate in community service initiatives and reside with American host families to gain firsthand exposure to U.S. culture and society.
