The Sierra Leone Police has announced that it will continue strict enforcement of road safety regulations across the country effective Monday, March 9, 2026.
In a public notice issued by its Media and Public Relations Department on March 2, 2026, the Police informed the general public, motorbike riders, and motorists that the enforcement exercise will be carried out in collaboration with its partners.
According to the notice, the operation will focus on the mandatory wearing of crash helmets by all motorbike riders and passengers. It will also enforce the compulsory use of seatbelts by all front-seat passengers in moving motor vehicles.
The Police stated that during the first week of the exercise, from March 1 to March 7, 2026, officers will concentrate on public education and awareness raising.
This phase will involve reminding motorists, riders, and passengers about the regulations and issuing verbal warnings to individuals who fail to comply.
The objective of this initial phase, the notice said, is to encourage voluntary compliance and reinforce the life-saving importance of wearing crash helmets and seatbelts.
However, the Police warned that anyone found violating the regulations after the awareness period will be arrested and fined or charged to court in accordance with the law.
The notice described the announcement as an official warning and strongly advised members of the public to comply, stating that failure to do so will attract the full force of the law.
