Staff of the government-owned telecommunication company, Sierratel have raised serious concerns over their living condition over the past years.
Mohamed Sawaneh, Chief Shop Steward for Sierratel stated that it’s been 10 months since they last received salaries adding that they have gone four years without leave allowance, and an outstanding backlog of one year.
He said the workers union have previously negotiated for an increment of salaries by Le450,000 which is yet to be paid and a Le170,000 as ten months backlog.
He further stated that the situation has led to frustration and death for some of their colleagues, adding that some workers who died in active service families have not received their pensions while those who reached retirement age have not received their benefits for the past two to three years.
He disclosed that the government have earlier promised to pay their outstanding backlogs on the 27th of January 2023, which they are yet to receive.
Mr. Sawaneh concluded by saying they have over the years channeled their complaints to authorities’ concerns, including the State House, Ministry of Information and Communication, and others, but noted that there is still no positive response to help salvage their situation.
