The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), in partnership with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Sierra Leone, has announced a national short video competition under the theme “China–Sierra Leone Cooperation in My Eyes.”

The competition marks the 55th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between China and Sierra Leone and coincides with the China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges (2026). Organisers said the initiative seeks to strengthen people-to-people friendship, showcase shared development experiences, and highlight the positive impact of China–Sierra Leone cooperation from the perspective of Sierra Leoneans.

Who Can Participate

The competition is open to all Sierra Leoneans, including journalists, media practitioners, content creators, social media influencers, students, young people, academics, professionals, researchers, community storytellers, and the general public. Collaborative works with Chinese creators are welcome, but submissions should primarily feature Sierra Leonean perspectives.

Competition Focus

Participants are encouraged to reflect creatively on China–Sierra Leone relations, with suggested focus areas including:

  • Stories of friendship and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries
  • China’s contribution to Sierra Leone’s development in areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, trade, and transportation
  • Cultural exchanges and everyday moments of cooperation
  • Youth stories highlighting opportunities created through collaboration
  • Visions for the future of China–Sierra Leone cooperation, including sustainable development and the Belt and Road Initiative

Technical Requirements

  • Video length: Maximum of 5 minutes
  • Formats: MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV
  • Resolution: Minimum Full HD (1920 × 1080)
  • File size: Maximum 500MB per submission
  • Language: English (subtitles optional but encouraged)
  • Originality: All entries must be original, and participants must own full copyright to their work
    Participants may submit multiple entries.

Submission Process and Deadline

Videos and a brief description (including the creator’s name and contact details) should be emailed to [email protected]. The email subject must follow this format: Creator’s Name – Video Title – Phone Number.

The competition opened immediately, and the submission deadline is 31st March 2026. Late entries will not be considered.

Awards and Recognition

A joint panel of experts from SLAJ and the Chinese Embassy will review entries. Winning videos will receive cash prizes and certificates of recognition, and selected works will be showcased on the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone’s social media platforms and other media outlets.

The competition is jointly organised by the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Sierra Leone, with the aim of encouraging Sierra Leoneans to share their stories and experiences of China–Sierra Leone cooperation through creativity and storytelling.
