The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has strongly condemned the recent attacks on its former president, Umaru Fofana, by members and supporters of the All People’s Congress (APC) during a media event held yesterday at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown.

Fofana, who had been officially invited by the APC to cover the event, was confronted just outside the venue as he rushed to file his report. A large group of APC supporters subjected him to offensive remarks targeting his mother.

According to Umaru Fofana, the hostility continued as the group pursued him into the hotel carpark. There, they continued to use indecent language and gestures while also threatening him physically. Fortunately, Fofana was rescued by onlookers and a fellow journalist who guided him to a safe location.

This is not the first time that Fofana, a broadcaster for the BBC and Reuters, has faced such attacks from APC members and supporters, including influential figures within the party. On previous occasions, Fofana had reported the incidents to the APC leadership, who have neither condemned the actions of their members nor taken any other form of action.

SLAJ President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla expressed his dismay over the incident, stating, “This attack on Fofana is both regrettable and shocking, especially considering that it occurred during an event where journalists were invited to listen to the party’s grievances and communicate them to the public. Political parties must understand that it is their responsibility to ensure the safety and security of journalists, particularly during the electoral period.”

SLAJ is calling on the APC to publicly and unequivocally denounce the recent attack on Fofana. Furthermore, the association urges the party to take appropriate actions and proactive measures to discourage their supporters from verbally and physically assaulting journalists.

The statement also appeals to all political parties and candidates participating in the upcoming June 24 elections to prioritize the safety and well-being of journalists and citizens engaged in democratic activities, especially amidst the rising political tensions.

In response to the incident, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Sidi Yayah Tunis, confirmed receiving a complaint from Fofana. Tunis assured that the matter would be brought to the attention of the party’s leadership. “It is unfortunate and something we do not condone. Although none of us was present when it happened, we will investigate and identify those involved in order to take appropriate and decisive action,” he stated.
