The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has congratulated the 14 media houses that emerged successful in the first phase of the National Fund for Public Interest Media (NaFPIM) grants.

The awarding ceremony took place at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown on Thursday, 28th  August 2025.

A total of Sixty Thousand United States Dollars (US$60,000), provided by the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM) in partnership with BBC Media Action, was disbursed among the grantees.

Furthermore, the initiative stems from the National Action Plan (NAP), which aims to strengthen independent, professional, and public-interest journalism across Sierra Leone.

Presenting the grants, SLAJ President Alhaji Manika Kamara commended the NaFPIM Multi-Stakeholders Board and Technical Working Group for their diligent work. He urged the beneficiaries to implement their projects with professionalism and integrity, stressing that success at this stage would help attract more funding to support media development in the country.

Finally, SLAJ calls on the Government of Sierra Leone to fulfill its commitment of providing counterpart funding to the Fund, and reaffirms its commitment to championing press freedom, safeguarding media rights, and supporting initiatives that promote sustainable, independent, and impactful journalism in Sierra Leone.
