The President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Alhaji Manika Kamara, was present during the official launch of the 2025 European Union and Government of Sierra Leone Bus Tour on Friday, 26th September 2025.
“This initiative is not only about showcasing the EU’s work in Sierra Leone; it also provides a unique opportunity for journalists to travel to remote communities, engage with the people, and capture stories that reflect both progress and persistent challenges.’’ the SLAJ President said.
President Kamara noted that as journalists, “our responsibility is not just to promote development achievements but to give voice to the voiceless. When you go into these communities, talk to the people, listen to their experiences, and bring those stories to the nation and the wider world. Not only do public relations report the realities, the successes, and the struggles, in the interest of transparency, accountability, and nation-building.”
He also threw light on the media’s role in disseminating credible information when journalists have access to accurate and firsthand accounts.
He stressed on SLAJ ‘s committment to working with development partners to ensure that journalists have such access to play their role in inclusive national development.
Kamara ended by congratulating the European Union, the Government of Sierra Leone, and all partners involved in this dynamic two-week journey, which will take journalists across all regions of the country, showcasing transformative projects that are creating opportunities, building connectivity, and driving prosperity for Sierra Leoneans.
The EU Bus Tour is an initiative developed by Team Europe and EU Member States in Freetown last year May. The tour mainly focuses on showcasing the impact of EU-funded projects across Sierra Leone. During the tour, journalists will visit several districts across the country and witness tangible impact of the EU’s work and support in sectors including agriculture and rural development, youth and women’s empowerment and skills development.
