The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists in courtesy visit expressed concerns regarding Truth Media and G8 Media in with Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, at his Youyi Building office in Freetown.
Newly elected SLAJ President Alhaji Manika Kamara highlighted the suspension of Truth Media’s license and ongoing delays in spectrum allocation for G8 Media as significant threats to media freedom in the country. “These issues threaten to undo the achievements we’ve made in recent years,” he warned, calling for fair and prompt resolutions that uphold media rights.
In response, Minister Chernor Bah clarified that Truth Media’s suspension was due to unpaid license fees and renewal issues, while G8 Media remained on a pending list for spectrum allocation. Both officials assured SLAJ that these matters were being actively addressed.
During the meeting, former SLAJ President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla presented an official position paper advocating for a dedicated Chapter 12 in the revised constitution. This proposed chapter seeks to enshrine press freedom and freedom of expression as fundamental rights. Nasralla urged the Minister to support the proposal, which has already been submitted to the Attorney General.
Newly elected President Kamara echoed this appeal, emphasizing the importance of Chapter 12 in strengthening press freedom and expressing appreciation for the Ministry’s longstanding support for the media. The call for a constitutional chapter on press freedom aligns with SLAJ’s commitment to safeguarding media rights amid ongoing challenges.
The association also paid a visit to Truth Media, where they discussed with the co-owner Amadu Lamrana Bah. Mr Bah expressed frustration over the suspension but welcomed the reassurances provided by the Government and said he was willing to work toward a resolution.
