The Sierra Leone Alcohol Policy Alliance (SLAPA) successfully wrapped up a day-long dialogue session on the implementation of the National Alcohol Policy, supported by the Foundation for Rural Transformation (FoRUT), a significant step towards fostering a healthier society.

The event, held on Saturday, October 14th, 2023, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including paramount chiefs, educators, members of law enforcement agencies, students, women’s leaders, civil society organizations, and the press.

During the session, Alhassan Jalloh, the National Coordinator of SLAPA, highlighted the crucial components of the National Alcohol Policy, emphasizing the World Health Organization’s best practices for alcohol policy, including regulating alcohol availability, pricing, and advertisement. Jalloh underscored that these measures are integral to Sierra Leone’s national alcohol policy, aiming to legislate control over alcohol accessibility, increase alcohol taxation, and regulate alcohol-related advertisements, promotions, and sponsorships effectively.

The dialogue session provided an invaluable platform for open discussions and the exchange of ideas. Paramount chiefs, teachers, law enforcement agencies, students, women’s leaders, civil society organizations, and the press actively participated, contributing diverse insights and experiences related to alcohol consumption and its societal impact.

Alhassan Jalloh reiterated SLAPA’s commitment, alongside its partners such as FoRUT, to sustained collaboration with stakeholders. Their objective remains to ensure the successful implementation of the National Alcohol Policy, fostering a positive transformation within the nation. The dialogue session marked a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to implement the policy, showcasing the potential for effective strategies and a safer environment for all citizens.

Expressing their unanimous support, Ibrahim Borgiwa Swaray, Chairman of the Civil Society Organization (CSO), spoke on behalf of the participants. He emphasized the policy’s objectives and stressed the vital importance of its efficient execution. Swaray called for united efforts from all stakeholders, highlighting the collective responsibility in addressing the challenges posed by alcohol consumption in Sierra Leone. The session concluded with a shared vision of a healthier and safer future, underpinned by a resolute commitment to realizing the goals outlined in the National Alcohol Policy.
